"Climbing the Greasy Pole"

Did you know that in the UK, there are various examples of both vertical and horizontal, “Climbing the greasy pole,” games dating back to at least the 1850's? 

In this week’s special programme celebrating Saint Lucia’s Nobel Laureate Festival, Delia’s guest is Mr Cornelius Rene, an Ophthalmic Surgeon based at the world leading and teaching hospital, Addenbrooke, in Cambridge, England. 

His journey from Saint Lucia, to being the UK’s first Black Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon is discussed, with examples of his challenges, as he explains how his chosen metaphor resonates with his life and career.
